Mr. Nurul Islam Moni was born in Borguna in 1955. He first won the parliamentary election of 1988 as an independent candidate. At that time he was the youngest member of the Parliament of Bangladesh. He again won the election as an independent candidate in 1991, which was the fairest of all elections in Bangladesh history. He won the parliamentary election again in 2001.
Mr. Moni was known for his fiery speech asking for the establishment of true democracy and rule of law in the country. He passionately fought for the decentralization of power and eridication of governmental corruption. He promoted human rights throughout the 25 years of his political career. He was accorded the Best Parliamentarian award by the Association of Journalists, Bangladesh, in 1989.
Mr. Moni completed his MSc from University of Dhaka in 1976. Currently, he is the Chairman of Islam Group. His family include wife and three children, who are pursuing higher studies in the USA.
